Slotcar Speedweek Report and Pictures.
(Thanks to Rudi from Monte Carlo)

Saturday (11 July 2004) saw most of the 22 racers practicing all classes during the day. Sunday saw two endurance races, a 1-hour FLY Classic and a 2-hour Metal Sports. These races served as practice for all the visitors. Each racer used his own car during his driving stint.

A part of the pits.

The FLY Classic race was a closely fought battle between all the teams, all driving Chevrons. The Rusty team broke a chassis, which was hastily replaced, with the Ruan team losing a wheel just short of the flag.

Results were as follows:

Ruan Schoeman, Werner Boshoff, Johan Hanekom, Monte Carlo291 laps
Rusty Hornsby, Anthony Bartlet, Rudi Odendaal PMCC, Private, Monte Carlo 287 laps
Carel (Snr) van Heerden, Jaques de Kok, Christopher Wheeler, Monte Carlo, Mini Speedway 277 laps
Sakkie Joubert, Gys de Kok, Sid Barnbey, Mini Speedway 263 laps

The results of the 1 hour Metal Sport race is not available

The first serious racing commenced on Monday, with Heats 1 for FLY Classics, Metal Formula 1 and Plastic Touring cars. The FLY Classic race was a closely fought affair, and drew much attention due to the stock standard cars. The majority of racers used Chevrons, with one Porsche 917 and one custom built Ferrari 350 Can-Am. Ruan set the pace right from the start, which proved to be tough to beat. Christopher unfortunately broke the chassis and had to retire early during his race.

Prize giving was held with the normal formalities and praise. The Cape Town guys ran away with most of the trophies.

The braai fires were lit which burned late into the night with singing the order of the day, and plans being made to get down to Cape Town before the end of the year.

Conclusion:
Everyone enjoyed a wonderful week of racing festivities, with no hash words spoken. Some racers could not always make it on time due to other commitments, however they were always accommodated. All racers thoroughly enjoyed the week, even though the cold sometimes got to the bones. This meant that most racers on occasion had to seek a little place in the sun.
